Productive Avoidance

My entrepreneurship class. Well, it’s really only two things: the paper. And Megan.

Megan is my partner. The paper, well that’s the assignment.

Since the end of August, together we have been composing a business plan for our model business Ski Bum Cupcakes.

The business, if it were real, would be opening right now. In Whistler, British Columbia. Which is kinda cool to think about.

The idea for the business, well… it was mine. Its premise? High quality cupcakes served in an environmentally conscious manner. It’s something I have toyed with in my head for a long time. It is something I would like to do for a living. Maybe I could even use this business plan?

If it ever gets done, that is.

This paper has taken for fucking and sucking forever. We have researched and written and rewritten and argued and argued and argued and made a few ultimatums. It’s been catty. Sometimes it really sucked. But overall, I would say I am really thankful for this experience. It has really taught me how to work. Work hard. Work with people that sometimes clash. Work in a semi-stressful environment. Work for hours. And I feel really accomplished for making it this far. The paper is due Wednesday at 7:30 AM when Megan and I stroll in to present in front of “the judges” (which is actually our midterm grade, not the DECA competition.)

As much as we have finished, there is still SO much more to do. At least it feels that way. I have numbers to crunch and additions to make. I need to finalize the appendix, the table of contents, and our bibliography. I need to reread the bitch out loud and check for mechanics. I need to count the chickens, pick the apples, and bake a damn loaf of bread. Okay, that last sentence is a lie, but I do feel like I have a lot to do.

Yet, I am here. Writing a blog post. Sometimes I crack myself up.

Cheers to feeling accomplished. I’ll post an update as to how this all figures out later.

Fuck it. I am bringing the blog back.

Authority, see if I care. I’ve let you take away everything else, but you can’t take this away. Not my blog damn it.

Readers, get excited.

You had the opportunity to silently watch from the sidelines, but even you can abuse your power. Your one last hole into my life and my head has been sealed off.

Thanks for always making me feel so great about myself.

It's a state of affairs
and a state of emotions
the kind of thing you must
understand
I tell you one thing
you'll tell me another
we walk away
maybe then shake hands

Published Lists from Musicians

Today I got the new OK Go album, Of the Blue Color of the Sky.

Of the Blue Colour of the Sky

The Latest from OK Go

Upon looking inside the booklet, I discovered this:

The font cover displays themes common to the book and the album. Each line represents a sentence, with the album’s lyrics fanning to the left and the text of the book fanning to the right. Each theme is represented by a color. For sentences dealing with multiple themes, the colors are added together as light is, such that each theme’s color both lightens and tints the resultant line.

[Now, I am not quite sure what book they are referring to. The album art book has several bizarre geometric images and patterns within the first few pages before the lyrics, however they mean nothing that I can decipher. The lyrics make up the second half of the book. (The lyrics are phenomenal, by the way. Check back tomorrow for a review of this album and Vampire Weekend's Contra.)]

Anyway-

OK Go listed twenty five themes which make up the bulk of their music, at least in this album, and inspired them to compose what they did. So here they are:

  1. Unfounded or Wildly Broad Claims
  2. Wonderment
  3. Causality/Unavoidable Consequences/Compelled Behavior
  4. Reference to an Individual, or Direct Address to/from One
  5. Anecdotal or Expository Context
  6. Figuring it all Out
  7. Unanswerable/Impossible/Rhetorical Questions
  8. Light/Optics/Color
  9. Fire/Combustion/Chemical/Physical Reactions
  10. Attraction/Repulsion
  11. Things that, in Retrospect, Proved to Be Wrong
  12. Plants and Animals/Animal Behavior
  13. The Sky or Things Falling From It
  14. Women
  15. Optimism/Hope
  16. Dissatisfaction
  17. Bodies/Body Parts/Bodily Functions
  18. God/Faith
  19. Corruscation
  20. Death
  21. Magic
  22. Global Mechanics
  23. Confusion/Curiosity
  24. Pride
  25. Prescriptions for a Better World

I have several thoughts about this list:

A) This could be the 25 themes of PostSecret postcards. It seems to me that almost every single one could fall into one of those categories.

B) That is a lot of inspiration. I would expect something more like one inspiration per song..

C) Cool art project.

D) If I were a musician, what would I be inspired by?

Now I am a master list-maker. But this one has kinda baffled me. I’ve written letters, essays, blog posts, and even some poetry, but I don’t know if I have ever quite written lyrics to go along to music. So here are some things that inspire me in life, and that I would most likely incorporate into whatever music I may or may not write in this lifetime.

  • Woods Hole/Cape Cod
  • Sunny afternoons
  • Time spent alone/day dreams
  • Driving
  • Rhetorical questions, or at least questions I have that I can’t seem to answer
  • Dirty jokes/thoughts/actions
  • Mistakes
  • Dancing/Other Music
  • Nature, in general
  • Love/loss/relationships/regrets
  • Happiness/Optimism
  • Suggestions on how society can improve
  • Things that happen at Night
  • Reading/peaceful activities and how they are interrupted
  • Goals/Things I hope Happen
  • Ferris Bueller/Movie Moments
  • Art
  • Stuff about/directed towards/letters from certain People
  • Men
  • Water
  • Desire/Waiting/Songs by the Stones
  • Sleep/Waking Up/Naps
  • Stuff that Is Eye Catching
  • Comedic Events/Words/Actions
  • Looking Good

As much as I love music, I dunno how I myself could fit into the world of music… (exhibit a- my wacky themes/inspirations)
